The scientific typesetting sytem LaTeX2e is mainly used in mathematically oriented fields; this is most likely due to its outstanding equation setting capabilities. Unfortunately, LaTeX is much less used (known?) in the biosciences.

The BioTeX project wants to provide sophisticated LaTeX extensions for biochemists/(molecular) biologists. In addition to the scientific value it is desired to combine the habitual TeX output quality with the highest degree of ease of use. Contributions are appreciated!

If you are interested and new to TeX, here are links to the German "Deutschsprachige Anwendervereinigung TeX e.V." (DANTE e.V.) and the TeX Users Group (tug) in the US. There you will find general information about TeX/LaTeX, comprehensive documentation and free TeX versions for almost all computer systems. Strongly recommended is The Not So Short Introduction to LaTeX 2e by Oetiker, Partl, Hyna and Schlegl, which gives a quick but comprehensive overview.
